(MM) TONIGHT — AS WE’VE MENTIONED — HOLIDAY TRAVEL IS IN FULL SWING. (HE) IF YOU’RE SEARCHING FOR FLIGHTS OUT OF PROVIDENCE, YOU’VE PROBABLY NOTICED ADVERTISEMENTS FOR SOME GREAT DEALS. (MM) BUT WILL YOU REALLY SAVE MONEY FLYING ON A BUDGET AIRLINE? EYEWITNESS NEWS CONSUMER REPORTER SUSAN CAMBPELL IS COMPARING COSTS BETWEEN LOW COST CARRIERS AND LEGACY AIRLINES — TO FIND OUT. SHE JOINS US WITH THE STORY THAT’S NEW TONIGHT. CONSUMERS CAN GET GREAT DEALS ON BUDGET AIRLINES. BUT EVERYTHING IS AL A CARTE… FROM YOUR SEAT SELECTION TO A CAN OF SODA…. AND WHAT YOU PAY… IS OFTEN MUCH MORE THAN THE ADVERTISED COST. ALLEGIANT… FRONTIER… NORWEIGAN… LOW-COST CARRIER HAVE LANDED IN PROVIDENCE… (Tim Howes, Johnson & Wales University) 15:06:06 for pvd it’s great b/c we’re seeing airfares come down. :08 it’s also providing a lot of good competition for some of the other legacy airlines. TIM HOWES IS AN ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR OF BUSINESS AT JOHNSON AND WALES UNIVERSITY.. AND HE KEEPS CLOSE TABS ON THE AIRLINE INDUSTRY. HE SAYS -IT’S IMPORTANT TO RESEARCH ALL OF THE COSTS THAT COULD PILE ONTO YOUR AIRFARE. 15:04:57 for most of these discount carriers like frontier and like norweigan if you’re going to go overseas, you’re looking at between $35-$70 each way for bags, whether it’s a carry on or a checked bag :12 so keep that in mind when you’re looking at the cheap airfare. :15 oftentimes it still comes out to be a better deal, but you need to know that. :20 TO SHOW YOU THE DIFFERENCE… WE SEARCHED FOR FLIGHTS FROM PROVIDENCE TO TAMPA. TO KEEP THINGS ON A LEVEL PLAYING FIELD — WE DID ALL OF OUR SEARCHES WITHIN A 30 MINUTE TIME SPAN. AND MADE SURE WE WERE LOOKING FOR THE SAME DATES. FIRST UP– ALLEGIANT. THE ADVERTISED PRICE ON THE LOW-COST CARRIER WAS 76 BUCKS, ROUND TRIP. THAT DOESN’T INCLUDE THE COST TO CHOOSE YOUR SEAT… (Seat Fee: $10-$25, depending on location, leg space, position) THE COST OF A CARRY ON… (Carry-On: $16) OR YOUR CHECKED BAGGAGE… EACH WAY. ($22) IF YOU NEED TO PRINT YOUR BOARDING PASS AT THE AIRPORT – THAT’S AN EXTRA 5 BUCKS EACH WAY. (($10)) AND IF YOU WANT A SNACK AND A BOTTLE OF WATER ON BOARD – THAT WILL COST YOU, TOO. (($2 for water, $3 for snack x 2 round trip)) ALL OF IT ADDED UP– TOTALED 192 DOLLARS… MORE THAN DOUBLE THE ADVERTISED PRICE. THE ONLY OTHER NON-STOP FLIGHT TO TAMPA WAS ON SOUTHWEST… THE ADVERTISED PRICE… 235 DOLLARS. OUR CARRY ON, CHECKED BAG, SNACK AND WATER ARE INCLUDED…. SO THE TOTAL REMAINED 235 BUCKS. DELTA… AMERICAN… AND UNITED… ALL HAD 1 STOP… TO GET FROM PROVIDENCE TO TAMPA. CARRY-ONS, A SMALL SNACK AND WATER ARE INCLUDED. BUT EACH HAS A BAGGAGE FEE… EACH WAY… UPPING THE TOTAL COST. YOU CAN SEE – IN THIS CASE – THE LOW COST CARRIER WAS STILL THE MOST AFFORDABLE OPTION. TO COMPETE WITH LOW COST CARRIERS… DELTA, AMERICAN, AND UNITED ALL HAVE “BASIC ECONOMY” FARES… THOSE TICKETS DON’T COME WITH SEAT ASSIGNMENTS…. YOU AND IN SOME CASES – YOU WON’T HAVE HAVE ACCESS TO OVERHEAD BIN SPACE FOR A CARRY-ON.
