TheSmartLocal.com Okay. Sup guys! Me and Joyce here. We are currently at Sembawang Airbase for a very special reason. We are going to get the opportunity to do something that very few people get to do lah. And that is, to board the helicopter which you will see in NDP 2018 flypast. But before that, we’re gonna go for a safety briefing first so let’s go! I scared! So, before we board the helicopter, we have with us, Lim and Govan. What is your job scope for this year’s NDP? Assisting the pilot, as and when if they get closer to the other aircraft in the front, we will advise them to move back to the correct position. What is the commitment like? The preparation and the training leading up to the final flypast? As early as May, we start. So, maybe twice a week or once a week, all the way to the final. Ya’ll got scared of heights? Nope, obviously not! If we scared of heights, we won’t be in this. One of the criteria is when we bring out our trainees, that’s the first thing we’ll check. Because we don’t only fly, we also do like a search and rescue. We also do winching. Do ya’ll have any advice because I’ve a fear of heights? Just sit close to me later. Okay! You say ah? I hold your hand if I scared, okay? Do ya’ll fly all the different types of aircrafts or do ya’ll only fly one? We only stick to one platform. We only fly the S Piece (Super Puma). We do not cross-train on other platforms. Jon wants to know if it’s possible to hang out of the aircraft. That’s honestly the only thing that’s been on his mind out of everything. Even though he has a fear of heights. Becuase we were told that we’re gonna get harnesses to walk around. So he’s just wondering if he can do the Macau tower kind of thing.
Uh no See, I told you already. We’re gonna be boarding that in a few minutes! They’re giving me a harness so later, I can stand up! I will do. I will be a brave boy. I got no harness. So what if you have no harness? Then I cannot walk around and like… hang out. They found one extra for me. Wooo! Lucky. If not, my FOMO level is gonna be off the charts. How was the experience ah? Like the noises were chaotic but because we had the earplugs right, it was like the most peaceful thing that you can find amidst that sort of chaos. You just have to focus on the view. But it was a very surreal experience. Then you just enjoying and soaking everything in lah. Like I’ve never seen Singapore from this perspective before. Amazing! Like once in a lifetime experience lah. When we took the Super Puma, then you get to see all this planatation thing-y that you don’t even know is what. Then you see all these random islands nearby also. So yeah, that was cool for me. The entire experience right, initially, I was quite scared. I mean, because I have a fear of heights. But once we got onto the helicopter, I couldn’t even feel it take off, actually. Yeah! It’s damn smooth eh.
Everything feels very safe. The crew all know exactly what they’re doing. I think my favourite part is when they went past the city skyline. It’s at this awkward height that you would never see the skyline from. So, you really feel like you’re part of the formation. We were actually in a formation with the other helicopters. So, you can see them right next to you one eh! The helicopters fly damn close to each other! Like I got a little bit nervous. You just feel very exclusive orh! This is an experience, money can’t even buy. Boom. Giveaway time! So, we have 5 NDP funpacks to give away this time round! And if you don’t know what’s inside, go check out the review that we did of the items inside here! On top of that, we’re gonna be giving away… a pair of actual day NDP tickets! So to win, just comment below and tell us how many aircrafts were used in the enhance aerial display. And you might get to watch it on the actual day itself! Shoutout to the RSAF crew for looking out for us and for protecting our skies! If you have any questions about the NDP, you can click on the links in the description box below.
