Staying Salty, Sailing the Mediterranean (Sailing La Vagabonde) Ep. 110

Let go, let go, let go, let go You’ve got it That was better Over the next few days we will be visiting an archipelago of islands just above Sardinia called La Maddalena It’s a national park so it’s quite protected and we got some serious wind today Destiny and James have just taken the kayak to land And us three are brainstorming some ideas Which is exciting very important stuff The day after we dropped anchor in the so-called secret islands we realized that they weren’t quite as secret as we initially thought In came ferry after ferry and park rangers doing the rounds We were all keen on finding a new anchorage so we set off for a little sail Just got a little light-headed there Troyer yeah? yeah, think I might’ve pulled the anchor up too quick We’re going two point two knots, but it’s only five nautical miles away Maybe i’ll be able to get some work done today. Should we put the code D up? How was your morning guys what did you get up to? it was quite nice we paddled over to the shore and around the beach went for a swim bought some trinkets oh yeah, you found the man that was selling all those yea, oh cool It was a father-son team, I think they’ve been doing it forever awesome It was pretty nice I’m always amazed because when you get there no, one’s at paradise because they want to be parked over there And we got the place all to ourselves quite amazing we got some very sooky seagulls. What is that sound? I’ve never heard a seagull do that That anchor is dug there’s all this weird ink stuff in the water i don’t know what it is like it falls apart it’s like ink but I cant see any octopus getting around i really don’t know what could have frightened them in these waters I just found this funnest thing ever, walking upside down on the hull, it’s like moon walking, seriously, its so much fun what’s going on james slight toe injury i think i cut it on a bolt What are you guys upto? i think we’re just changing the oil On the outboard Theres quite a bit of blood in the dinghy need some drama Riley hey riley yeah what is with the sauces in the fridge i have a camera so don’t don’t go getting out yeah please explain No nothing it’s just a little thing that i thought i’d do you said we need to decorate a bit Or in the boat that’s not decoration i think it adds a bit of character all right i’ve found our sauce bottle with the sauce of your desires written on it and also The sauce of your inspiration i just checked the bin and there’s all like empty tabasco bottles and stuff So he’s poured all the sauces into this and all the mustard into the other one it was james and destiny’s last night on board and as a last-minute decision they wanted to celebrate and say thanks over dinner and beers So we piled in cunningham the third and putted to the port of Maddalena we heard upon arrival we would be taken back in time with the eighteenth-century buildings along the waterfront Thanks to the sardinian president for restricting any building within 1.5 miles from the beach most of la maddalena is how it has been for many centuries oh my gosh i can’t even believe this this is all candy Smells like licorice so nice wow, wow i think we’ve got something naughty for the older ones purse Destiny and james took us out for dinner last night was really nice thanks guys riley insisted i go on a massive swim with him this morning and i’m feeling a lot better because of it and then i made a big stir fry veggies for breakfast i thought we could all do with a bit of that after last night bottle of wine and gelato later we’re dropping James and destiny with all haste back to Palau because there’s a train which goes from there to santa teresa where the journey began we’re just leaving this little anchorage everything’s quite Shallow it’s just paying a bit of attention as, we leave here and i’ve got a new bandana for when it’s super windy this is we’re taking these guys today Palau And you can see here there’s like a million wrecks They’re all Fairly deep, forty meters, always submerged, but yeah something has gone on here Hello sorry to interrupt we’re just going to just gonna quiz you over a few things okay did you enjoy your time on board destiny i did very much learned a lot about sailing and being on the ocean or sea a little bit yeah very nice what was.. cuz you’re thinking about buying a boat so What were you hoping to we were talking about it last night and we’re pretty hopeful to go get one we’ve got you hooked, we won’t be able to do it full-time but we could do a substantial amount of time yeah yeah and like everything like you start small It takes a lot of effort to sail and to maintain the sails and the boat yeah and keep a constant eye on that yeah i bet you guys spend I’d say four or five hours a day each making videos yeah or Editing yeah i would say at least yeah that’s a lot more work than i imagined well i think i’ve been obsessively researching boats came across i think video number like three maybe there’s quite relaxing and i was inspired by your guys’s like sense of adventure yeah and like courage to go do it i thought jeez if i could help out a young couple a little bit and Maybe inspire some other people i think maybe you’re partaking a little bit in the adventure And you know it’s gonna keep going i mean i won’t to say what your plans are but i’m excited yeah, that’s secret, secret business we’ll continue being patrons yep and i’m excited to see what happens. Awesome So the new patron that’s been pulled is Mark Borg congratulations you’re invited on board and i hope you go through the effort of making sure that it happens because It’s quite amazing so get in touch with Riley and Elayna, its so worth it nice thank you James we’ll have to race when you get your racing boat let’s do it see you guys later its been awesome You just got a message from Oaky i found out that i just heard that he found out that his water tanks are basically like a bilge he said that he had a look in them and they’re just disgusting and he’s like i don’t feel healthy his bilge pump is burnt out because of a broken float switch and his gearbox is leaking oil constantly as well poor oaky where is he? it’s pretty standard, pretty standard on a sailboat Where is he? Valencia So we just said goodbye to destiny and james and now we are about to jump in a hire car and drive To the airport which is about an hour away and go and pick up Riley’s good friend from school and his girlfriend amanda so they’re going, to be joining us for four days of sailing around sardinia it’s a gorgeous day in palau apart from the noise from those ferries they’re really annoying All right in the tender I go everyone’s been for a swim and now we are heading off it’s already sailing lessons on board with Riley Whats your name mate? Tony Riley’s got the new big boat so i thought i’d better come have a look. i went to le grand motte and seen him get this six months ago, four months ago now awesome and it’s still pretty amazing how he well how they’ve got this boat Cant believe it, it’s an amazing boat so what is your name? amanda what brings you aboard La Vagabonde So we’re here for a holiday, a week on the boat with Riley and Elayna, which is pretty cool, just having some time out from work You have any previous sailing experience? none whatsoever i haven’t really been out on the water much so first time Oh no what do you think? loving it so far, its amazing How do we know each other Riley? We grew up in the same country town little town in South Australia called Cowell C O W E L L probably the best place Best, place i’ve ever seen i’ve been to a few yeah riley used to live 15 kms out of town and had to ride his bike in Tonys parents used to let me stay at his house because i lived like i wasn’t on a farm and i was just in the middle of nowhere So that was very nice of them so i’m just sitting outside looking at all the traffic and it got me thinking, i’m wondering why there are so many people here in the north of sardinia and If we look at the chart you can just see all these islands scattered around the place it really is the most Protected place like there is there’s an anchorage to go to for every kind of condition and there’s no swell here which is great Yeah it really is like perfect for cruising around But you really have to keep an eye out because there’s boats everywhere just like in a blink of an eye, ones right up your bum or cruising around the front it’s crazy stuff let go, let go, let go, let go ditch it, ditch it, get rid of it that was better So i’m just in the shower and i hear this motor sound and i look at the window and there is a tender flying past the window like i’ve never in my life thought i would see such a thing that is the coolest thing i’ve ever seen what on earth Oh, is he gonna land he’s coming in is it i think so Tell him to come over here Look how full the moon is wicked people have been having a bit longer showers than i wouldve liked you said um double servings for everyone I wouldve had a 2 minute shower yea its 3 i reckon hes a tight arse yea im not very happy with that Made water all day, you got too much water and now we’ve used too much no no no its alright i’m not angry disappointed, disappointed are you hungry? im starving dinner is ready let’s go I Hope you enjoyed hanging out with us please don’t forget to give the video a like and tune in next week for some very exciting news

OIl floats on top. That is ink from a Squid or Octopus. Non Toxic but tastes like shit . Will make prey spit out their meal. On fishing trips the deckhands will hang over the side so they release the ink outside the boat. I watched a dozen times but was looking at her butt.

Random Q: Is it common/practical/smart/safe to ever leave your ship in moorage and explore an island or mainland? For instance, mooring in the South of France and then bopping around Europe for a week or two?

You guys are inspiring. I'm hoping to save enough $$ to join you in the real world some time. 😉

Get out of the Med ASAP! Too crowded, too many tourists, too little true sailing. It's not good for the sailor's soul and the vids aren't nearly as interesting.

Amazing! Fireworks over Palau – must have been the night of 4th of September at 10.30 p.m…. My boat was in the harbour of Palau, too. We were watching this spectacle from the coastline and had no clue that our famous and beloved sailors Elayna and Riley were so close to us. Next time we check on marine traffic.com if you're at the same time in the same place – so we can invite you for dinner or pizza 🙂 in order to say "thank you so much for sharing your journey around the world with us…". Keep on traveling and posting your perfect edited amazing videos. Kindest regards, Guido

FLYING DINGHYS have been around for years now. You need to Google more 🙂
Ultralights with water floats also exist. The thing to have (safety) is a parachute for your flying dinghy and another chute for you (on your back or belly) AND enough altitude to use them… oh, and training, experience and hummm God on your side… and a bit of luck too. I owned and flew fully aerobatic ultralights, that is / was a real kick.

The black ink stuff looks like crude oil. It leaks naturally in many places. And the ocean has a way of breaking it down pretty quickly…

The black ink comes from a cuttlefish or an octopus, they use it as a diversion to run away from predators.

If I can have HALF the adventures of you, I will die a happy man…. trading in my blue collar and work boots for a straw hat and sandals

Oilleak in the gearbox on a saildrive, then you have to lift the boat and change the sealing ring on the propshaft. You will need a torch because its shrunken on the shaft. A service man vill do it in a coupe of hours. Better change the bilge sealing as well. Cost between 1000 – 2000 €, parts cost 200€ and yes you can also do it yourself.

Hey Riley and Elayna, I'm interested to find out your running rigging setup for your furling headsail, do you have jib cars? Never really seen La Vaga's running rigging layout and boat setup, would be really interesting for those of us that do sail, Riles mate, 22 knots boat speed, cracking along, we'll still have you guys on the boat I crew on, SV Warrior, a '95 custom built 60' retired ocean racer built for the '95 Cape to Rio ocean race, 3 times class winner with 4 trans Atlantic return trips under her keel, 11 cockpit winches, twin two speed pedestal grinders, #77 Lewmar self tailing primaries, max boat speed clocked at 31 knots. Awesome videos by the way, if you're ever in Port Elizabeth South Africa you are welcome to come and sail a thoroughbred

Hi Riley and Elayna! I've only just discovered your channel. Thank you so much for this video! The footage off Capria and in La Maddalena brought back some great memories of being stationed there 2000-2002. You docked your dinghy just adjacent to my old apartment! I hope you enjoyed your visit to that cozy island. Hope you are both well and in good spirits. Fair winds and following seas.

Isn't the dark stuff oil from the oil spill in Greece in 2017? It might also be the stuff the dumped on it to make it dilute into the water so it doesn't harm the wildlife. IDK its just a guess.

I watch your videos all the time. Very much enjoyed them. Sailing is on my bucket list. Back in 2004 I almost bought a 34 foot.
To this day I regret not buying the sailboat. I have yet to sail, but I haven't given up hope. I had actually got to the point of signing the paperwork to buy that 34 foot boat, however at that time maybe it was meant to be. And 05 hurricane Rita hit , and many sailboats were destroyed. I have been a professional photographer for 34 years and I documented all of the destruction on the south east of Texas. Referring to pleasure Island and Crystal Beach. I've had a boat all my life but not a sailboat .
The largest boat was an American offshore 31 ft. race boat. I love boating so much and would like to sale is a dream I have on my bucket list. For the moment I live that dream through watching your videos. Keep it up and be thankful you have had this opportunity. Life is very short at it's best❤️👍

Im a birdwatcher, we anchored in that area a few years ago and also heard those birds – they are called Cory’s Shearwater. What is unusual is that they usually make that sound during the night, we never heard them during the day.
